The August 28, 2003, issue of the journal Nature includes a collection of reports that analyze key components of the ocean's food web and highlight the significance of genome sequences from the sea. Access to these reports is free of charge to any reader. The reports focus particularly on marine phytoplankton. The site also includes links to related articles from the Nature archives, but viewing requires a paid subscription.

Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2004
From the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), this report documents how human activities continue as the primary cause of the global coral reef crisis. It may be viewed or downloaded in two complete volume segments or by chapters within the volumes. Chapters include: Global Threats to Coral Reefs; New Initiatives in Coral Reef Monitoring, Research Management and Conservation, and The Status of The Cold-Water Reefs of The World and others addressing the status of coral reefs in many regions of the world including East Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Hawaiian Archipelago, the Caribbean, the South West Pacific, the Red Sea, and more. The report also contains a sizeable suggested reading list.

Toward Rebuilding America's Marine Fisheries: Annual Report to Congress on the Status of US Fisheries - 2001
An annual report required by a congressional mandate "emphasizing the need to prevent overfishing and to rebuild depressed fish stocks." Although addressing the human impacts on the nation's fisheries is an enormous task, this report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicates success in recent years. The number of fish stocks with sustainable harvest rates has increased 45 percent since 1999, and sustainable stocks rose by 1/3. Includes many tables and appendices.
